Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

Modern precision care that reduces recovery time, minimizes complications, and helps preserve your vision for the future.

What is MIGS?

Overview

At Cathedral Eye Clinic, we offer state-of-the-art Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) – a modern, gentler approach to managing glaucoma for patients who wish to reduce their dependence on eye-drop medications or are looking for a safer alternative to traditional glaucoma surgery.

MIGS encompasses a variety of procedures and micro-implants designed to restore the natural drainage of fluid from your eye, lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) and protecting your vision from further optic nerve damage.

MIGS is particularly suited to patients with mild to moderate glaucoma who are not yet candidates for more invasive surgery — though the techniques we offer can also be considered in combination with cataract surgery when appropriate.

Benefits

Four compelling reasons to choose minimally invasive treatment

1

Reduced surgical trauma & faster recovery

MIGS uses microscopic instruments and tiny incisions, avoiding the extensive tissue disruption associated with traditional glaucoma surgery.

2

Lower risk of complications

Relative to conventional procedures, MIGS typically has fewer serious risks such as infection, scarring or prolonged hypotony.

3

Improved quality of life

Many patients achieve stable eye pressure with reduced reliance on glaucoma medications, simplifying their long-term treatment.

4

Preservation of future treatment options

Because MIGS procedures are minimally disruptive, they leave the conjunctiva intact, allowing more invasive glaucoma surgery in the future if needed.

Your Experience

Your Treatment Journey

Expert guidance and personalised care at every step

1

Comprehensive Consultation

Your journey begins with an in-depth consultation with our clinical team.

During this appointment, we carry out a full eye assessment using advanced diagnostic technology to gain a complete picture of your eye health. We take time to understand your symptoms, lifestyle and visual expectations so we can recommend the most appropriate treatment options and support you in making a confident, informed decision.

2

Tailored Treatment Planning

Every patient is unique – and so is every treatment plan.

Once your assessment is complete, your specialist will discuss the most suitable procedure for your individual needs. We prioritise transparency and evidence-based care, ensuring you fully understand the benefits, expectations and alternatives before moving forward.

3

Preparing for Surgery

Before your procedure, our team will guide you through any pre-operative steps, including medication instructions and aftercare guidance.

You will meet your surgeon again to review the treatment plan and have plenty of time to ask questions. Our goal is to ensure you feel fully prepared, supported and reassured ahead of your surgery day.

4

Your Procedure Day

When you arrive, our friendly nursing and technical staff will welcome you and help you feel comfortable.

Your surgeon will talk you through each stage of the process so you know exactly what to expect. As with any eye procedure, vision may be temporarily blurred afterwards, so please arrange alternative transport and avoid driving.

5

Aftercare & Recovery

Following your procedure, we closely monitor your recovery through scheduled follow-up appointments included in your aftercare package.

Most patients notice improvement very quickly, although recovery times vary by treatment. Our team remains available at every stage to answer questions and provide reassurance, ensuring you achieve the best possible outcome for your vision.

Common Questions

What you need to know about MIGS.

Is MIGS a cure for glaucoma?

No - MIGS does not reverse existing optic nerve damage or restore lost vision. Instead, it helps control intraocular pressure and slows or halts further damage, preserving your remaining vision.

Who is a good candidate for MIGS?

MIGS is generally suited to patients with mild to moderate glaucoma, or those who have difficulty tolerating glaucoma medications. It can also be considered for patients needing cataract surgery.

Will I need glaucoma drops after MIGS?

Many patients experience a significant reduction in eye-drop requirements, and some may be able to stop them entirely. However, this depends on individual response and the severity of glaucoma.
