Cathedral Eye Clinic is excited to introduce Ireland’s first VisuMax SMILE Laser Eye Surgery. SMILE Laser Eye Surgery achieves the visual result of LASIK eye surgery, but without the risks associated with this procedure.
What is SMILE?
SMILE is short for Small Incision lenticule Extraction. The surgeon only uses one type of laser (Femtosecond) for the complete procedure.
The Femtosecond laser penetrates the surface of the cornea without making any cut and focuses on the deeper part of the cornea to carve out a shape called the lenticule.
SMILE has been successfully performed on more than 150,000 eyes and has become an established laser vision procedure for the correction of myopia.

What are the benefits of SMILE over Lasik?
Firstly, there is no corneal flap created with SMILE. This means that the cornea is kept stronger and there is no worry about the flap moving or dislodging. This means that SMILE is particularly good for people who play contact sports.
This is especially relevant for those with higher prescriptions or thinner corneas. This means that should you have been deemed unsuitable for lasik treatment, you may be suitable for corrective eye surgery with SMILE.
Thirdly, the corneal nerves are not damaged. This means that you are less likely to suffer from post-operative dry eyes and other associated complications.
What is the recovery time?
The visual recovery time is normally within 24 hours and it is a virtually painless procedure.
