About The Cathedral Eye Clinic

The Cathedral Eye Clinic opened in Belfast in March 2008. It is one of the first organisations to be based in the business units of the newly refurbished York street campus of the University of Ulster. It is also one of the first healthcare facilities to be located in the regeneration area of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter.

The Cathedral Eye Clinic has a team of consultant ophthalmologists providing specialist expertise in laser and refractive surgery, cataract surgery, anterior segment surgery, medical and surgical retina and oculoplastic surgery. Professor Johnny Moore FRCOphth and Mr John Fenton FRCSI are the Medical Directors of the clinic.

This range of medical expertise enables the clinic to treat eye conditions that may not be suitable for standard refractive surgery in other clinics. For example, Professor Johnny Moore specializes in treating difficult corneal and anterior segment problems using the most up-to-date laser platforms and intraocular lens technologies available in the world today. New treatments for the management of keratoconus, such as automated mechanical or laser lamellar surgery and Intacs, are also available.Please contact the Cathedral Eye Clinic for further information on other treatments.

Private and public patients, emergency care for the community

The clinic welcomes both private and NHS patients. The Cathedral Eye Clinic is the leading provider of ophthalmology services to the Northern Ireland Health and Social Services Boards within the initiatives to reduce waiting-lists by outsourcing to the private sector. Since January 2007, over 4,000 Northern Ireland health service patients have been treated as ophthalmic referrals with some 1,500 receiving operative procedures such as cataract surgery, laser treatment and vitreo-retinal and oculoplastic work In addition, the clinic will provide emergency care for patients in the local community.

Education and Training

The Cathedral Eye Clinic, in collaboration with the University of Ulster, provides an extensive programme of continual professional development courses. The varied programme is designed to provide opportunities to engage with current thinking on topical issues related to eye care.
