Surgeons
Professor Jonathan Moore FRCOphth PhD
Present position: Consultant Ophthalmologist, Mater Hospital & Royal Group of Hospitals, Belfast & Visiting Professor, Centre for Molecular Biosciences, University of Ulster Clinical Duties: Cataract, refractive, corneal graft and anterior segment surgeon Research interests: Cataract and refractive surgery outcomes along with ocular surface infection, inflammation and reconstructive surgery. Research group: Dry eye and ocular surface inflammation group University of Ulster
Professor Moore’s research and clinical interests are focussed upon the investigation and management of ocular surface pathologies. In his clinical work he focuses upon reconstructive corneal surgery, cataract and laser eye surgery. He is currently investigating the efficacy of various forms of femtosecond laser INTAC surgery to manage corneal ectasias including keratoconus and in addition is investigating results from the Moria DAESK system to manage corneal endothelial problems without the requirement for penetrating keratoplasties.
As a co-founder of the dry eye research group university of Ulster, currently this group is investigating the role played by ocular surface microbiology in inflammation and ocular surface defence mechanisms. These studies are focusing upon using molecular DNA technology and proteomics to unravel some of the complexities within this system.
Mr John Fenton FRCSI
Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Retinal Specialist and Refractive Fellow
Mr Fenton was awarded a scholarship to study medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin where he graduated in 1989. He trained at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin initially, before doing his advanced training at the New York State University, in Brooklyn, New York where he became US Board Certified in ophthalmic surgery in 1998. He then did a fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Louisiana State University, New Orleans before returning to Ireland as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Bons Secours Hospital, Tralee.
Mr Fenton has extensive experience in cataract, retinal and refractive surgery. He has also worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the NHS. Whilst in the UK he performed over 1000 refractive procedures at one of the busiest refractive surgery clinics.
He has published research papers in retinal surgery and is actively involved in refractive surgery research and training at The Cathedral Eye Clinic, Dublin
Mr Colin Willoughby FRCOphth, MD
Mr Colin Willoughby left Northern Ireland to attend medical school at the University of Liverpool, qualifying with a Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons) First Class in Anatomy in 1988, and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with Honours (MBChB Hons) in 1991. He commenced ophthalmology clinical training in 1993 in Liverpool and obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) in 1996. His subsequent training continued in Liverpool and included a corneal fellowship for one year and training as a Specialist Registrar in ophthalmology until 1999, when he became Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of Liverpool.
Colin completed a fellowship programme in Ocular Genetics at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. His initial research focussed on the ectodermal dysplasias, inherited disorders of the skin and cornea, gaining his Doctorate in Medicine (MD) in 2004 from the University of Liverpool. Colin now has a clinical and lab-based programme of research on the genetics of cataracts, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, keratoconus and other corneal diseases. He has published numerous high-ranking scientific papers in ophthalmology and genetics, written 3 book chapters, acts as a referee for twelve international ophthalmology journals as well as reviewing research grants for government and charitable funding bodies.
Currently, Colin is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and Senior Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast.
Mr Ajai K Tyagi MS FRCS
Mr Ajai K Tyagi MS FRCS, obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 1994. He completed his Registrar training in general Ophthalmology at The Birmingham & Midlands Eye Centre, Birmingham. Following this he underwent sub-specialist training in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He also undertook an Observership at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore to study new techniques in managing patients with retinal and in particular macular diseases.
Mr Tyagi was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist at The Birmingham & Midlands Eye Centre in 2001. This is the second largest eye hospital in UK and is a dedicated teaching hospital for medical students and Ophthalmologists in training. Mr Tyagi also trains surgeons from across the globe in vitreoretinal surgery. He has a large tertiary referral base with patients being from all over the country. He has presented at various international conferences and has published research papers in prestigious medical journals.
Mr Tyagi has specialist interest in medical and surgical management of patients with vitreoretinal diseases. Few of these are:
- Intravitreal lucentis and avastin: These new drugs can restore vision in patients with macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy
- Retinal detachment:He undertakes surgery for simple retinal detachments and the more complex cases associated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, trauma etc
- Macular holes: He performs internal limiting membrane peel to improve the success of the surgery. Short acting intraocular gasses are mainly used to reduce the duration of postoperative rehabilitation. Patients who cannot posture following the surgery are adviced to have the long acting gas.
- Age related macular degeneration: He is involved in both the medical and surgical management of patients with AMD. He performs the full range of treatment options for AMD including macular translocation for patients who will not benefit from medical treatment for AMD, new intravitreal drugs such as Avastin/Lucentis (improves vision in wet AMD).
- Diabetic retinopathy: He is happy to review patients with diabetic retinopathy and will perform retinal laser treatment or vitrectomy if necessary.
- Central retinal vein occlusion: He performs vitrectomy with optic neurotomy and intravitreal steroid injection. This surgery in some cases can prevent severe loss of vision
- Branch retinal vein occlusion: If indicated, new surgeries such as vitrectomy with sheathotomy are performed by him
- Epiretinal membranes: He performs internal limiting membrane peel along with ERM peel as this additional step can improve the outcomes following vitrectomy.>
- Subluxated/dislocated lens or IOL: Surgical management carried out by him may include vitrectomy, scleral sutured IOL implant or iris fixated IOL.
- Intravitreal triamcinolone: This drug can be used for macular oedema due to various conditions such as diabetic maculopathy, vein occlusion, uveitis, post cataract surgery etc.
- Retinal laser treatment: He performs laser treatment for patients with diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears etc.
- Ocular Trauma: He is keen to manage patients with ocular trauma and perform surgery if necessary.
